Customer Spotlight: Express Energy Boosts Productivity with EHS Software

Express Energy Services is a leading provider of safe and high-quality well construction and testing services for the U.S. oil and gas industry. The integrity-driven company’s core value of providing a safe work environment contributed to its recent acquisition by Butch’s, one of the largest privately-owned oil and gas servicing companies in the country.

The Challenge:
Meeting Customer Requirements for Mobile Capabilities

In 2019, a major customer required Express Energy employees to scan a QR code whenever entering work sites. Express’s leadership realized the advantages of a system that could handle this function and also enable communication with field staff by phone, email, and mobile app. The CEO heard rave reviews about KPA EHS Software (formerly iScout), and tapped Jeanna Kelly, the Employee Development Manager at Express Energy Services to find out more.

But evaluating the platform’s technical capabilities was just one part of the assignment. Finding a fit for the company’s remote field workforce was potentially a greater hurdle.

“Being in the oil and gas industry, you have a lot of employees who don’t even use their company email,” Kelly said. “We knew that acclimating them to technology was going to be a challenge.

”Given this workplace environment, communicating safety incidents to company leadership was also challenging. “We used to use a text notification,” said Kelly. “But texting was limited by how many phone numbers you could include. So, you couldn’t reach everyone at the same time.”

The Solution:
Express Energy rolled out KPA EHS Software in late 2019, meeting its client’s QR-code check-in requirements for field staff. Then, the solution went far beyond.

“All of our employees have access to our forms, observation cards, and pre-trip inspections, plus they can receive push notifications including updates to our COVID-related policies,” Kelly explained. “They can also access all of our SOPs, policies, and procedures, even if they’re offline.

Another significant upside of the technology was the Learning Management System (LMS) capabilities KPA provides. Depending on the workforce’s size at a given time, Express needed to roll out anywhere from 20 up to 150 annual Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) trainings, each clocking in at four hours long.

In the past, training was delivered classroom-style by Express HSE field staff at significant expense. With KPA software in place, the whole training process moved to the mobile app and was well-received by employees.

“I’ve worked in several systems,” stated Kelly “and KPA EHS software is by far the most user-friendly. The app has been adopted as a no-brainer by our staff. They love it.”

The Result:
Core Workplace Safety Values Lead to Company Growth

“KPA software has been a game-changer,” said Kelly. “It’s given us the ability to react quickly to incidents, whether they’re vehicle incidents, a roadside inspection, or an injury, making our leadership team aware in real-time.”

The company has won business by promoting the system and its contribution toward high safety ratings. KPA software has also helped Express retain accounts where incidents have occurred.

“The ability to pull up the system and show a client your progress on an investigation, who all has been involved, and the outcome has made a huge difference in maintaining good relationships,” Kelly shared. “We’ve even seen some customers adopt the software as a result of seeing what it can do.

”And last but not least, Express Energy’s acquiring company, Butch’s, will now be switching from a previous platform and will extend KPA software to its additional 600 employees. “They’ve seen our success on this system and we’re rolling it out as we speak.”
