12 of the Best EHS Blogs to Follow

I don’t know about you, but most of us could stand to read more. That’s particularly true for professionals in the field of environmental health and safety (also known as environment, health, and safety or “EHS” for short). State and federal regulations are changing constantly, trends and technologies don’t sit still, and new risks pop up every day. Only an avid reader can stay ahead of it all.

But you can’t read everything, and some sources of information are better than others. Not sure where to start? If you’re looking for recommendations for EHS blogs to follow, you’ve come to the right place.

In alphabetical order, here are 12 blogs, sites, and news sources every EHS professional should be reading. (Note: this list is current as of 2020.)

1. The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP)

ASSP educates, develops standards for, and advocates on behalf of safety professionals throughout the United States. The organization counts nearly 40,000 members among its ranks, making it one of the loudest voices in the world of EHS. Check out the ASSP blog for “insights on trends in the safety profession, including developments in safety management, worker safety, government and regulatory affairs, and standards.”

2. EHS Daily Advisor

EHS Daily Advisor is exactly what it sounds like—a go-to source for daily EHS updates and insights. Published by Business and Legal Resources (BLR), EHS Daily Advisor offers a host of free, up-to-the-minute resources for organizations of all sizes. Readers can find reports, white papers, tips, how-tos, and more in both article and webcast formats. Be sure to bookmark the site—or better yet, subscribe via email and receive a free resource: “12 Ways to Boost Workplace Safety.”

3. EHS Today

EHS Today is one of our favorite blogs to follow. We’ve recapped, linked to, and cited several of their articles here. The publication offers an engaging mix of news, columns, guidance, and research for and by EHS leaders in industries such as manufacturing, construction, professional services, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and many more. For an example of the kinds of insights available, check out EHS Today’s recent article, “Actively Engaging Employees Using Five Pillars of Safety.

4. Environment + Energy Leader

For over a decade, Environment + Energy Leader has brought the world “news, best practices, and research that have influenced environment, energy, and sustainability conversations—and powered decision-making.” The publication offers numerous resources, from articles to webinars, focused on the environment and energy management challenges EHS professionals face every day.

5. GreenBiz

GreenBiz has been around since 1991—and from day 1, it’s released high-quality content that helps leaders connect environmental sustainability initiatives to larger business goals. The company not only provides thought leadership but produces numerous highly trafficked events around the world. Make sure to check out GreenBiz’s in-depth research reports, including its annual “State of Green Business” report and its recent “Energy Resilience” report.

6. Industrial Safety & Hygiene News (ISHN)

Available in print and online, ISHN is one of the most widely-read and circulated EHS publications in the world. The magazine reaches over 70,000 EHS leaders every month with an impressively broad range of articles written for professionals at organizations of all sizes. Topics covered include government regulations, safety culture, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, personal protective equipment, training, workforce, psychology, and more.

7. NAEM’s GreenTie Blog

The blog offers actionable information for people involved in the nuts and bolts of EHS, making it an excellent source for best practices, product reviews, and benchmarking.

8. The NSC’s Safety First Blog

The National Safety Council (NSC) is one of the most important players in the field of EHS, with multiple sites on this list (see Safety+Health below). For one, the organization hosts the world’s largest annual event dedicated to workplace safety: the National Safety Council Congress & Expo (see our NSC coverage from last year here and here). Outside of the expo, the NSC also regularly publishes great informational content on its blog, Safety First. Excellent articles published recently include “Find Your Why for Safety Leadership” and “Three Popular Technologies That Can Help Save Worker Lives.”

9. OSHA Law Blog

If your organization needs to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules, you should be reading the OSHA Law Blog. Written by the attorneys of Jackson Lewis, the OSHA Law Blog offers legal insights and commentary on the latest OSHA enforcement actions, rulemaking, legislation, and guidance, as well as news about other regulators such as Cal/OSHA.

10. OSHA QuickTakes

Speaking of OSHA, one resource that needs to be on every EHS professional’s reading list is QuickTakes—OSHA’s semi-monthly bulletin “about enforcement actions, rulemaking, outreach activities, compliance assistance, and training and educational resources.” It’s a fast and easy way to keep up with what’s going on at OSHA, directly from the administration’s mouth.
