Q: Can we deduct the cost of a professional license from our employees’ paychecks if they can take the license with them if they resign?

A: It depends on your state. In Arizona, for example, employers may only make a deduction from an employee’s pay if it is required by state or federal law or court ordered. In addition, you may need the employee’s written consent to authorize the deduction.
