A program from the National Cybersecurity Alliance, Data Privacy Week was founded to empower individuals and businesses to respect privacy, safeguard data, and enable trust.

This year’s theme is Take Control of Your Data

This year, the alliance is encouraging users to review the platforms that already access their data and consider the personal information they share with future platforms. It centers on creating a sense of self-efficacy for users around their own data privacy and encourages them to explore the ways they can keep their data safe from attackers.

Data Privacy Week also encourages organizations to respect the rights of their customers.

Not only is this important from an ethical standpoint, but it also inspires trust and creates a reliable reputation for your company. Clients are more likely to want to work with you if they feel they can trust their information in your employees’ hands. Consider how your organization protects user data, and brainstorm steps you can take to make sure that data is even safer.

There are some steps you can take to make sure your company’s data stays safe and sound:

Create secure passwords

Using a secure password can prevent others from accessing your personal information.

It’s usually recommended that you use a long password with both uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and special characters. Using a password saver can also put your data in danger, so you may want to write them down and store them somewhere safe instead.

Learn to identify and address phishing messages

Phishing messages, or cyber-attacks attempted by luring the target into clicking on a link that gives the attacker access to personal data.

Keep public wifi use to a minimum

Another common way for cyber attacks to occur is through the use of public wifi.

Encourage your workforce to avoid using public wifi, especially when working on a device with access to company data. To discourage workers from putting your data at risk, we also recommend providing them with access to private wifi in the workplace.

Back up your data

If a data breach does happen, in many cases you will have to erase much of your data.

To ensure you don’t lose important company information, it’s important that you regularly back up your data so that you can access it even if the worst does occur.
