Sheet Metal Business Reduces Injuries by Modernizing Its Systems

"KPA has reduced our injuries and the severity of injuries. The app provides a daily reminder about safety that keeps our people on their toes."

Jesus Miguel, Safety Director

Client Profile

Four C’s Looks to Solidify and Grow Its Market-Leading Position in California’s Central Valley

Family-owned Four C’s, founded in 1980, focuses on mechanical sheet metal, roofing, re-roofing projects, and HVAC and ductwork in the private and commercial sectors. In 2011, sheet metal fabrication was moved to sister company Advanced Metal Works, and Four C’s Construction was created to focus on installation. Today, it is one of the leading sheet metal fabrication and installation companies in California’s Central Valley, with its eye on reducing safety-related losses.

Challenge

The Need to Create Easier (and Software-based) Reporting for Field Staff

“Our biggest concern is fall protection since we work at heights,” explained Four C’s Safety Director Jesus Miguel. “Our second concern is lacerations and soft-tissue injuries because our metal panels have a sharp, or raw, edge. So, we wanted an app that could serve as a constant reminder to focus on safety.”

Miguel found two key challenges:

  • Lack of risk-management buy-in among field staff due to difficult software
  • Paper-based EHS system making data analysis impossible

“Analytics is huge, like the ability to see the lead indicators before an issue arises,” Miguel said.

“We wanted a system that provided easy access to that crucial data.”

Solution

KPA’s Comprehensive and Customizable Software Enables Company to Prioritize Safety

After evaluating several vendors, Four C’s chose KPA Flex for its comprehensive capabilities. “With KPA, it’s all-in-one software, so you don’t have to have multiple solutions,” Miguel stated.

“You can configure and tailor it significantly, including custom forms, which was big for us.”

A key feature was offline mobile capability: “One of the main reasons we liked KPA was the ability to access forms when out of cell phone range. This is critical when you’ve got people disconnected out there in the field.”

Result

Four C’s Reaps the Benefits of Reduced Injuries, Increased Engagement and Time Savings

Implementation has delivered significant improvements:

  • More frequent documentation (daily vs. weekly)
  • Reduced injuries and injury severity
  • Improved training capabilities with on-site retraining
  • Substantial time savings on documentation

“It’s phenomenal. In the past, I would have to do a half-hour job walk, then spend 40 minutes on paperwork on the backend. Now, I can submit my report in real-time.”

“KPA saves hours of documentation on every job.”

To maintain engagement, Miguel introduced a safety question of the day and rewards program for training completion and improvement, further enhancing the safety culture.
