Challenge
When Cory Balthrop began as Director of Environmental Health & Safety at Alleguard, there was no EHS program or safety culture. “We need to identify, a tool and a resource that we can use to help satisfy that need,” he said.
As an emerging organization in terms of EHS maturity, Alleguard required a solution that was both robust and flexible enough to grow with them.
“We immediately started sourcing options out there and really identified that KPA provided us both the tools, but the flexibility to use them to fit our business need and fit what the organization was ready for as we were: an emerging organization when it comes to EHS.”
“So having something that was highly developed and and all of these very detailed safety tasks wasn’t necessarily gonna solve it.” Balthrop continues “We needed to be able to kind of simplify that down so that we could get that through the organization and help them digest it before maturing through our process.”
The company’s starting point was: zero to very limited compliance training completion, no methodology for tracking corrective actions, inadequate incident reporting, and no structured approach for leadership engagement on the shop floor.
Solution
After evaluating various options, Alleguard selected KPA’s Flex platform because it provided both comprehensive tools and the flexibility to tailor them to fit the organization’s specific needs and readiness level.
One of the most valuable aspects of KPA for Alleguard has been the ability to customize forms and processes without requiring specialized IT support.
“We’ve been able to build a lot of application reforms that satisfy a business need, even though it’s not necessarily what KPA was meant for,” explains the EHS leader.
“We’ve been able to do that ourselves without having an IT infrastructure because it’s intuitive. The logic that’s built into making these forms is simple enough that I can do it. So if I can do it, anybody can do it.”
Alleguard also highlights the exceptional support they’ve received from KPA as a key differentiator. “Support I received from KPA is phenomenal, unlike most software platforms I’ve used. I have a dedicated account representative who answers me within twenty-four hours at the latest, typically much faster than that.”
This responsive support extends to product development as well. “I’ve never worked with a group that’s more open to new ideas. When we say, ‘we’d love it if we could do this,’ the next thing I know, a product person is reaching out to a member of my team saying, ‘I heard about this. Can we talk about it? I want to learn more.'”
Results
Since implementing KPA, Alleguard has transformed its EHS program with measurable results:
1. The company now maintains above 90% overall training compliance rate across the entire organization, up from virtually zero.
2. They systematically track all follow-up actions with a goal of zero overdue items—a target that most operations have already achieved.
3. Site leadership teams now complete monthly self-inspections with dynamically changing questions created by the EHS team. These inspections engage operational leaders directly in safety processes, creating corrective actions to continuously improve conditions.
Through KPA’s platform, Alleguard has successfully built a comprehensive EHS culture from scratch, demonstrating how the right technology partner can accelerate safety program development even in organizations starting with minimal EHS infrastructure.
