Client Profile
A Commitment to EHS Excellence in the Oil and Gas Industry
Headquartered in Oklahoma City, Expand Energy Corporation (formerly Chesapeake Energy) is committed to safely answering the call for affordable, reliable, lower-carbon energy. The 1,300-person oil-and-gas company operates more than 15,000 oil wells across the United States. Their goal is to achieve net-zero direct GHG emissions by 2035, focusing on EHS excellence.
Challenge
The Need for a Solid Documentation System
Expand Energy handles management of oil wells, from exploration to production to end-of-life and restoration operations. Harris Marcom supervises HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) for Expand’s workover operations, which cover 17 workover rigs nationwide.
Key risks include:
- Loss of well control leading to uncontrolled flow of gas, oil, or well fluids
- Dropped objects and pinch points in confined spaces
- Inadvertent greenhouse gas emissions
The company lacked a dependable process for managing EHS goals and progress. “We utilized a system that didn’t really have any controls,” Marcom explained. “Anybody could go in and create a form or a process.”
Solution
Real-time, Reliable Project Tracking and Trends Data
Implementing KPA in 2019 transformed their operations. “For us, the form-making function is number one,” Marcom said. “Back in the day, you would do all these reports, and they may stay in a notebook or a stack of paper on your desk. You wouldn’t be able to see trends.”
“With KPA, we’ve been able to take our processes and build them out into forms to get the data we want.”
The company uses KPA Flex for equipment and procedure audits with real-time acknowledgments. “Now, I can go into KPA and see if people have signed off on documents, procedures, safety alerts, and things like that. It’s helped us not only from a safety standpoint but also from a legality standpoint.”
Result
Reduced Incidents and Improved Tracking of Greenhouse Emissions
The implementation has driven widespread adoption and improved safety culture:
- Significant increase in incident avoidance through better tracking
- Real-time hazard correction and vendor trend analysis
- Mobile-friendly system accessible offline
- Enhanced greenhouse gas emission tracking with photo documentation
“Once we started using KPA, everybody wanted a piece of the pie. It wasn’t about forcing anyone, like: ‘Thou shalt do this.’ It was: ‘Look at the benefits. Look at the trending data we’re getting right away.'”
The platform has proven especially valuable for environmental compliance: “We’re able to show when an emission is identified and then document everything in this user-friendly system, including uploading photos right into the KPA form,” Marcom said.
“We can now prove exactly how we’re addressing our emission issues.”
