Charting the Path Forward: A Guide to Better Safety Metrics

Toby Graham

As safety programs evolve and mature, the way we measure their effectiveness must also advance. While traditional safety metrics have served their purpose, forward-thinking organizations are discovering that strategic measurement—focusing on what truly matters—can transform their safety programs from good to exceptional.

Whether you’re just beginning to establish safety KPIs or looking to enhance your existing metrics, the path forward requires a thoughtful, strategic approach that aligns measurement with meaningful outcomes. Let’s explore how to build and maintain safety metrics that don’t just track performance but actively drive improvements in workplace safety.

The Path Forward:

Measuring What Matters

About the Survey

In partnership with EHS Daily Advisor, our recent survey gathered valuable data from 110 industry leaders, safety officers, and employees, shedding light on the most effective KPIs and their impact on workplace safety.

Organizations need to focus on measuring what matters to drive safety improvements. And the good news is that safety managers generally feel they’re on the right track. While it may not be pretty, nor incredibly efficient. In true form, safety managers are MacGyvering their way through.

  • 26% of respondents disagree or strongly disagree that their current safety KPIs accurately reflect what truly matters.

Implement SMART KPIs

Ensure your KPIs are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based. This framework helps create clear, actionable metrics that drive real improvements.

Balance Leading and Lagging Indicators

While lagging indicators like TRIR are important, leading indicators such as near-miss reporting and safety observations can help prevent incidents before they occur.

Use the Safety Pyramid

Focus on the foundational elements of the Safety Pyramid, such as unsafe behaviors and hazards, to prevent more serious incidents at the top.

Engage Leadership and Front-Line Workers

Involve all levels of the organization in setting and tracking safety goals to foster a culture of safety.

Lean on Technology

Implement EHS software that can centralize data collection, automate reporting, and provide real-time insights into safety performance.
